In our anticipation of leaving for Bournemouth we arrived at Waterloo station two hours early! Not that we were keen to leave London, but I in particular needed a dose of seaside, and as we decided we didn't have time in our schedule to visit Cornwall this time, Bournemouth seemed a good option. Also it had a good connection to Wells via Bristol, where we would be staying with my friend Lynn.
By the time we arrived at Bournemouth it was the middle of the day, and in our infinite wisdom we decided that we would walk to the motel, as we were in the habit of doing. Unfortunately we did not anticipate the steepness of the hills, especially in the heat and dragging bags along. Thank goodness the bags were small, but by this stage probably weighed more than the seven kilos we started off with! That's when I made a note to self regarding using taxis if in doubt. Bournemouth as we found out later did not have Ubers, but nothing is very far away.
After eventually finding the Travel Rest Motel and unpacking we went straight out to investigate the beach - along with the rest of England! I have not seen crowds like that on a beach since my teenage years in New Zealand, and then they would not have covered such a vast area. Of course there were the cute little beach huts and the endless queues for ice cream, as well as the pier with its entertainment areas as you find in most British seaside towns. So different to Antipodean beaches - which is good. I did test the water with my toe, and although it was August, there was no way I was going any further in! They breed them tough up there.
We had a thai meal that night, at a posh restaurant so it cost an arm and a leg, but what the hell - we're doing the bigger bucket list! We also bought tickets to a concert on the beach for the Thursday during the annual air show, which we didn't realise was on at that time as well. That explained the crowds as well I suppose.
