Paul, as promised, picked us up from our motel and drove us and some other volunteers, including Natalie, to the bric a brac market at St Quentin. This was our first meeting with the people we would be spending the next two weeks with - helping restore an old French masters house, La Giraudiere, into a learning hamlet for people from all over the world to visit and improve their French skills. We were joined by another car, driven by Roy, a semi-retired doctor from Glasgow, and we spent the day first of all at the market, then the local soccer, and finally a farm expo at Barbezieux, another nearby village. This was a taste of things to come, with never any excuse to be bored. At the expo I had a plate of paella, eight huge oysters, ice cream and then cognac - yummy.
We finally arrived at La Giraudiere at around 11pm, and slept fitfully in two single beds in our really hot room. We did not open the window because of bugs, but it was wide open from then on!
