We very sensibly got a cab to the station where we caught a train to Bristol, changing at Southampton. We chose Bristol to fit in with our friend Lynn's accommodation arrangements with her family. She lives in Wells in a very tidy townhouse complex called Carlton Mews. Last time we saw Lynn, in 2011, she was living in Carnoustie in Scotland, and on the point of leaving her husband, only we didn't know it!
Bristol was wet when we arrived, but it was only a short walk to our accommodation at the Hilton Garden Inn. This was one of the times we splashed out on a posh hotel, as it was in fact cheaper than an Airbnb and centrally located.
When the rain cleared we went out and found, you guessed it, a Hop On Hop Off bus. Once again we didn't hop off, and stayed on for the full tour around the city and environs. I had always thought of Bristol as being a bit industrial, focussing on ship building, and while it still does this, there is a lot more to it than I realised. It has very pretty green areas, breath-taking bridges, a well established university culture and of course, it is Banksy's birthplace.
That night we stayed in, making the most of the hotel, having drinks and dinner there and watching tv from our very comfortable king size bed.
